Born in Daraba in the Jagatsinghpur district of Odisha, he was a gifted linguist who could speak several languages fluently. He began his artistic journey on the stage at the Annapurna Theatre in Cuttack before making his cinematic debut in the 1960 film Sri Lokenath. He won the National Film Award for his performance in the 1976 film Shesha Shrabana and the Orissa State Film Award for Best Supporting Actor for the 1987 film Bhulihuena. Additionally, he received multiple Best Villain awards, the Orissa Sangeet Nataka Akademi Award, and the highest cinematic honor of the state, the Jayadeva Purashkar, in 1994 for his outstanding lifetime contribution to the growth and development of Odia cinema. In his personal life, he was married to Hemalata Swain, and he is survived by their two sons, Akash Kumar and Prithiviraj, a daughter named Dharitri, and several grandchildren who carry forward his family legacy.
